Santa Eulalia

View image

Santa Eulalia del Río (officially known in Catalan as Santa Eulària des Riu) is a municipality on the east of the island of Ibiza. During Muslim rule the area was called Xarc. Later, the Catalan conquest divided the island into sections that are similar to today’s boundaries. The name Santa Eulalia comes from the church that was constructed immediately after the Catalan conquest. This area also boasts the only river in the Balearic Islands, which was especially important during this period for farming and wheat mills. The town flourished around the church on the top of the Puig de Missa hill. The church that is found there today was built in the XVI century to act as a defence tower from which the entire town could fire artillery. The municipality also includes the parish of Santa Eulalia del Río, those of San Carles de Peralta and Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera and part of Nuestra Señora de Jesús and the Puig d´en Valls. There are approximately 25,080 residents and the surface area is 153.48km2. It also boasts a yacht club with room for 384 boats and the only golf course on the island, which features 18 holes.
