Oviedo

Oviedo (Uviéu in Asturian) is a city of Medieval origin (VIII century) and is the capital of the Principality of Asturias and home to 220.074 inhabitants.  It is the commercial and business capital and the administrative and university centre of the region.  Its most emblematic buildings include the Campoamor Theatre, the site where the Prince of Asturias awards are granted, as well as many museums and other interesting places to visit.  
The city of Oviedo is full of green areas, including the San Francisco Field, otherwise known as The Field (El Campo) among those from Oviedo.  It is a 90.000 square metre park situated in the centre of Oviedo next to Uría street (the most important commercial area of Oviedo) and is one of the most noteworthy areas of the capital of the Principality of Asturias.

Cathedral of Oviedo
Constructed between the end of the XIII century and middle of the XVI century, the Cathedral was built above a VIII century temple dedicated to Salvador.  It boasts the Holy Chamber of Oviedo, which is a World Heritage Site and where relics from  the city such as the Cross of Angels (on the shield of the council), the Cross of Victory (on the flag of the Principality), the Chest of Agates and the Holy Shroud can be found.

The Fountain *
It is located next to the buildings that form a rectangular, porch-lined plaza. Constructed during the XVII and XVIII centuries and built above a pond, the fountain was reconstructed at the end of the XX century.  The Fountain Market can be found here on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sunday mornings.
Archaelogical Museum *
Located in the Monastery Cloister of Saint Vincent, its setting includes pieces from the Palaeolithic period as well as the Roman, Pre-Roman, Romanic and Gothic periods.
Musuem of Fine Art of Asturias *
Inaugurated in 1980 in the Palace of Velarde, the building is a continuation of the Archaeological Museum through the back.  It houses a selection of works from Asturian artists as well as from other contemporary artists.
 
Diocesan Museum of Oviedo *
Open in 1990, it contains archaelogical remnants from the Cathedral, gold and silver creations, marbel pieces and wood sculptures as well as documents from the Cathedral Archive.

Tabularium Artis Asturiensis *
This private museum was founded in 1947 by D. Joaquín Manzanares, the Official Historian of Asturias.  It offers a selection of Asturian works of art.

Prince Felipe Auditorium *
Inaugurated in 1999, it offers activities all year round.

Campoamor Theatre*
This Neo-Classical building from the XIX century is the site where the Prince of Asturias Awards are granted.

San Francisco Field
Popularly known as The Field (El Campo) by those from Oviedo, it is a 90.000 square metre park situated in the centre of Oviedo and is one of the most significant places in the capital of the Principality of Asturias.
