Sicily
Named the “Island of the three points” by the Greeks, Sicily is a wonderful destination to discover. Etna, Europe’s biggest active volcano, captures the attention of many tourists with its rumblings and red and yellow gases while the native islanders remain indifferent to its activity. Etna is only one of the many marvellous attractions that travellers can visit on the island. One must miss cities such as Taormina, with its castle that provides some of the best views of the island, Agrigento which offers the best conserved Doric temples of the world, Catania with its majestic Cathedral and the Palacio Biscari, Piazza Armerina with its famous Roman mosaics…each corner of Sicily offers travellers history to discover.
Palermo
Palermo (Palermu in Sicilian) is the capital of Sicily and has witnessed the culture of all its conquistadors: the Carthagians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Spanish and Austrians have all left their footprint in this city, each with different artistic styles. Despite these influences, Palermo is a city that has conserved its own identity.
Some interesting tourist visits include the catacombs of the Capuchinos, with conserved mummies, the Arab-Norman style Cathedral, the Palazzo dei Normanni, the Mortorana churches, Saint Cataldo, Saint John of the Eremitas, Saint Ignatius, Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Giuseppe dei Teatini and Casa Professa; los Quattro Canti; the Pretoria Fountain; the Politeama and Massimo theatres; and the beautiful Mondello Beach. The most important museums of Palermo include the Archaeological Museum, the Regional Gallery of Sicily (Palazzo Abatellis), and the International Museum of Marionettes.
